Are you smarter than a TN tourist regarding traffic laws? Pt. 2

A prior blog post introduced the topic of common Tennessee driving laws that tourists might want to understand. Of course, local drivers can get caught up due to allegations of traffic violations, too.

Therefore, we thought that providing a basic rundown of the commonly violated traffic laws in Tennessee would be good for all readers, no matter where they might be from:

Motorcycle helmet: Not all who drive in Tennessee are driving cars. The weather in Memphis can make motorcycle riding a common mode of transportation. Laws regarding helmet use vary from state to state. In Tennessee, anyone on a motorcycle, including drivers and passengers, must wear a helmet.

Driving through construction zones: Whether someone is driving a car or a motorcycle, if they are driving through a construction zone, the risk of a fine for speeding is greater. Driving over the speed limit through a construction area can result in a traffic ticket and fine.

DUI law: While drunk driving penalties do vary from state to state, the general rule within the U.S. is that a blood alcohol content level of 0.08 percent and above will lead to a DUI charge. Along these same lines, Tennessee has a strict, zero tolerance open container law.

Child restraints: As if child restraint seat laws are not complicated enough, they vary among states. Tennessee requires all kids under the age of 9 to be secured in a proper child restraint. The car seat safety laws are so detailed it is best to verify them through an article on TN.gov.

Within the realm of criminal law in Tennessee, you might not take a traffic violation charge seriously. It is important to consider, however, that your name is your name; your record is your record; your money is your money. Work with a lawyer to truly try to make the legal situation less serious than it could be.
