Grandmother arrested at Shelby County jail for drug smuggling

Most people have good and warm thoughts about their grandmothers. Lovely women who often have amusing stories about their children and their lives. They're often simultaneously the glue and the backbone of strong families.

Sometimes they err by trying to help out their children's children, however. Shelby County law enforcement officials say that is what appears to be the case with a 68-year-old grandmother who, they say, was trying to bring drugs to her grandson.

The grandson is currently locked up in a county correctional facility. She has been charged with attempting to bring contraband into the facility. It is not yet clear if she will face drug possession charges as well.

A Memphis TV station reports that the woman's arrest affidavit states that a jail guard saw the grandmother give a bag a Doritos to her grandson. The officer said the grandson was observed taking a small, black object from the bag and giving it back to his grandmother.

At that point, the guard stepped in and took the black object from the prisoner. It turned out to be a package of drugs wrapped in electrical tape.

Inside, law enforcement officials said there several illegal substances:

  • 28.5 grams of methamphetamine
  • 11.4 grams of marijuana
  • 40 Xanax tablets
  • 1.7 grams of Ecstasy
  • 1.1 grams of heroin

The grandmother told authorities that she had been given the package from an unknown person a few hours before her jail visit. She thought the package contained a phone. She said that did not know about the drugs.

We do not know if she was duped or if she knew of the package's contents or what exactly happened in this case. But we do know that she faces a serious charge and that more accusations might be coming.

Those who face drug crime charges should speak with an attorney who understands the law and who can help protect your rights and freedom.
