They say that there is no love greater than the unconditional love a mother has for her child. But Memphis police are accusing a fellow officer of allowing her motherly love to get in the way of proper conduct.

The mother has been charged with official misconduct and tampering with evidence, the Commercial Appeal reports. Her son was a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped earlier this year by Bartlett police. After police found more than 300 grams of marijuana and a handgun in his backpack, he was arrested on drug crime charges and a weapons violation.

According to the newspaper’s report, after the vehicle carrying the cop’s son was pulled over, he called his 52-year-old mother, who was off duty at the time. He then allegedly slipped $630 to his mother during the Bartlett traffic stop, which she concealed in a pocket.

The veteran police officer has been suspended with pay while the Memphis police department investigates the allegations against her.

Her son has been charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance with intent to manufacture, deliver or sell. He was also charged of unlawful possession of a firearm.

Not only is his freedom in jeopardy after his arrest on the serious drug charges, but his mother’s career and freedom are on the line as well.

Those who face similarly serious accusations should decline to speak to prosecutors or police before they have spoken with a criminal defense lawyer dedicated to the protection of rights and personal liberty.
