Report: major violent crimes continues to drop in Memphis

According to a recent report from the Memphis-Shelby Crime Commission, major violent crime in the city and county decreased over the first six months of the year when compared to totals from 2017. All four types of crime in the major violent crime category declined through the end of June 2018. The category was down 8.1 percent in Memphis from a year ago and down 6.4 percent in Shelby County.

The data was gathered by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. The major violent crime category consists of homicide, rape and sexual assault, robbery and aggravated assault.

In Memphis, the mid-year major violent crime decline of 8.1 percent came after a first quarter decline of 5.1 percent. The county’s mid-year decline of 6.4 percent followed a first quarter drop of 4.9 percent.

However, not all crime declined in the city and county. The report says a motor vehicle theft spree drove property crime up by 4.3 percent in Memphis and 5.5 percent countywide compared to the first half of 2017.

Motor vehicle thefts are up a whopping 18 percent in Memphis and 21.1 percent across Shelby County.

It should be noted that a major subcategory of property crime – burglary – dropped 11.2 percent over the first six months of the year in Memphis and 8.6 percent for all of Shelby County.

The crime rate in 54 categories serves as an overall crime rate, the commission says, and in Memphis it declined 3.1 percent and was down 1.7 percent across the county.

Those who face criminal charges should decline to speak with prosecutors until they talk to a criminal defense attorney devoted to protecting their rights and freedom.
