Police: Ringing phone leads to more drug arrests

It takes about three hours to drive northeast of Memphis to Weakley County. A few days ago, investigators from the county sheriff’s department executed a search warrant there and seized more than a half of an ounce of crystal methamphetamine, along with meth pipes, digital scales and a loaded rifle.

A 43-year-old Tennessee man was arrested and charged with several serious crimes, including possession of methamphetamine with intent to sell and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

The Weakley County man was taken to the area sheriff’s office. During transport and after arrival at the office, his phone rang repeatedly.

A police officer answered the phone, pretending to be the suspect. The officer then apparently arranged a meth sale to a 21-year-old resident of nearby Greenfield. A meeting was set up at a Dresden convenience store, where deputies arrested the man who reportedly made the call, as well as a pair of women who were with him.

They were each charged with criminal attempt to possess methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Deputies then searched the car that the three suspects had arrived in; inside they found what was reported to be “a small amount of meth.”

According to a local news report, more criminal charges might be added in the case.

Obviously, the man accused of possession with intent to sell meth faces the most serious charges of the four. To protect his rights and freedom, he should decline to speak to law enforcement officials or a prosecutor until after he has spoken with an attorney experienced in drug defense.
