Tennessee couple facing meth, weed possession charges

On the far side of Tennessee sits Morristown, a modest city of about 30,000 residents. Of course, no matter what size the city or where it is situated within the state’s borders, people arrested on drug charges there are subject to the same harsh punishments if convicted.

Two people in Morristown recently arrested on drug-related charges are undoubtedly pondering that stark reality right now. According to a news article, they were each arrested on a charge of possession of methamphetamine, among other serious allegations.

A police officer wrote in his report that officers seized 15 grams of meth and eight grams of marijuana.

A 34-year-old Morristown woman was charged with possession or casual exchange of methamphetamine, Schedule IV drug possession, possession of a Schedule VI drug and possession of drug paraphernalia. A 39-year-old Johnson City man was charged with Schedule VI drug possession, drug paraphernalia possession and failing to appear on an unrelated warrant.

Local police had responded to a call about a woman apparently unconscious in a car in a parking lot. The woman said the man was her boyfriend; he was inside the store shopping in possession of her purse.

After a check, police took the man into custody on the failure to appear charge and then reportedly noticed an odor of marijuana. Police searched the purse and found paraphernalia; a search of the car turned up marijuana and a container of methamphetamine.

A search of the woman apparently resulted in officers finding three Suboxone and Alprazolam pills, and quantities of marijuana and meth.

Anyone arrested in similar circumstances should immediately contact a criminal defense lawyer who understands the strict legal rules of search and seizure.
