Memphis TV station shares video of sheriff arrested for DUI

The video shared by a Memphis TV station begins with a police officer’s insistent rap on a man’s car window. “You need to wake up and talk to me,” the officer says. “What are you doing? You’re on the side of the road, slumped over.”

It turned out that the man was sheriff of a nearby county. It also turned out that his blood-alcohol content (BAC) was measured at .23 percent, or nearly three times the legal limit of .08 percent. Despite the sheriff’s repeated requests for leniency from the officers on the scene, he was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Fox 13’s shared video is of a Michigan sheriff who was asleep behind the wheel of his personal vehicle.

“I’m very fricken embarrassed,” the sheriff said as he stood, hands in pockets, next to his car. “Like you can’t fricken believe.”

“How many drinks did you have?” an off-camera officer asks. “Today?” the sheriff responds.

The video also shows the sheriff struggling with counting while taking steps as part of a roadside sobriety test.

Here in Tennessee, he would face a series of first-offense DUI conviction punishments that include time in jail that ranges from 8 hours to 11 months and 29 days. For those in our state who are accused, as the sheriff is, of having a BAC of .20 percent and above, the minimum jail time jumps from 8 hours to 7 consecutive days.

Those facing these harsh sanctions can protect their freedom, driver’s license and rights by contacting a skilled Memphis attorney experienced in DUI defense.
