Memphis police arrest man accused of trio of armed robberies

Memphis police recently announced the arrest of a Marvel Comics supervillain. According to a TV news report, a man who has allegedly worn a Green Goblin mask in a trio of armed robberies has been taken into custody.

Police say they are still looking for three accomplices in the string of robberies carried out during the past holiday season.

Law enforcement officials say they believe the man in custody robbed a Cash America pawn shop, a Dollar General store and an Advantage Pawn shop during an eight-day period that ended last Nov. 28. They said that a suspect wore a Green Goblin mask in each of the incidents. The other three suspects also wore masks, police told a Memphis news outlet.

Here in Tennessee, there are several legal definitions of robbery. The first, robbery, involves "theft of property from another person by violence or putting the person in fear." The charge of aggravated robbery includes "use of a deadly weapon" and a victim who "suffers bodily injury." There is also especially aggravated robbery, which includes "use of a deadly weapon" and a victim who suffers serious bodily injury.

  • Robbery: a Class C felony that can be punished by from 3 to 15 years in state prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
  • Aggravated robbery: a Class B felony which can mean 8 to 30 years behind bars and a fine of up to $25,000.
  • Especially aggravate robbery: a Class A felony that can mean imprisonment ranging from 15 years to 60 years. Fines go up to $50,000 for a conviction.
