Tennessee teacher facing drug possession charges

It takes a full day of driving east from Memphis in order to get to Johnson City, one of the largest cities in the eastern end of Tennessee. A teacher who lives in the city and works in nearby Kingsport was recently arrested in the school’s parking lot.

The 29-year-old has been charged with possession of schedule II narcotics and drug paraphernalia, according to a news source.

The Head Start teacher was arrested as she sat in a car with a man in the parking lot. When a police officer approached them and asked why they were there, the man said the teacher needed to pick something up from inside the school. When he got out of the vehicle, the officer noticed a butane torch in the car door.

Butane torches are sometimes used in drug activities.

A search of the vehicle resulted in the officer finding a “crystal substance,” as well as a glass pipe, cut straws, a spoon, scale and plastic bags, the report stated.

The teacher was then placed under arrest. However, police said the man tried to run, but was apprehended after he fell.

A spokesperson for the Upper East Tennessee Human Development agency confirmed that it employs the teacher. Head Start is an early childhood education and nutrition program for children of low-income families.

The spokesperson said “action will taken” by the agency after the teacher’s arrest, but did not specify if that meant termination, suspension or other.

Clearly, the teacher’s career is in jeopardy, as is her freedom. Before she discusses the evidence and charges with investigators or prosecutors, she should discuss her legal options with a skilled criminal defense attorney.
