Burning question: Did this Tennessee man commit a felony?

If you drive 400 miles east of Memphis, you will arrive in Maryville, a town that has been home to Sen. Lamar Alexander and former Tennessee coach Phil Fulmer, among others. One of those "others" is a man recently accused of doing something quite strange. He has been charged with a felony crime, but many wonder if the strange thing he's accused of doing is even a crime.

So what is he accused of doing? The 31-year-old Maryville man is accused of placing his testicles in a salsa container that was later delivered to a woman who had ordered Mexican food from an online delivery service. As we noted, this is strange stuff.

He was recently arrested on a Class C felony charge of adulteration of food, liquids or pharmaceuticals. If convicted, he could be sentenced to spend from three to six years in prison.

In order to be convicted under the somewhat obscure Tennessee law, it would have to be shown that his intent was to cause "bodily injury, serious bodily injury or death," the Knoxville News Sentinel reports.

A veteran Knoxville defense attorney told the paper that "It's doubtful under these facts, no matter how outrageous, that this criminal offense could be proven. It appears Salsa Man may have committed an act for which the legislature has not yet contemplated the absurdity of."

Another defense lawyer was blunter: "How in the hell would you think dipping your testicles in someone's salsa is going to kill them or do them serious bodily injury?"

How did the defendant wind up getting charged with this bizarre offense? A delivery driver made a video of the defendant apparently dipping into the salsa. When the video made it to Facebook, it came to the attention of law enforcement.

Strange days.
