The busts keep coming: two more Memphis cops arrested

They say there are more than 20,000 federal laws, and that Tennessee and the other 49 states each have thousands more. With an abundance of laws, it is no surprise that there is an abundance of arrests, too. But it is a bit surprising that Memphis law enforcement officers are being arrested so regularly for allegedly violating the laws they are paid to uphold.

Two more Memphis cops were arrested a few days ago, news reports stated. One of the officers was arrested for allegedly drunk driving and the other was involved in what was described as “a fight with a woman” in an East Memphis eatery.

Both of the officers have been taken away from their police duties until their cases are resolved, the news report stated.

Around 10 p.m., an 18-year veteran of the city police department reportedly lost control of his vehicle and struck a utility pole. He was taken into custody on suspicion that he had been driving under the influence of alcohol. He also faces other charges, though the news report gave no details on the additional accusations.

In early February, a 23-year-old cop was charged with domestic assault after he reportedly struck his pregnant girlfriend. However, those charges were later dropped and he was returned to duty.

Last month, a former cop was arrested on charges of sexual exploitation of a minor and two other former MPD officers received lengthy sentences for their roles in a heroin-smuggling scheme. One former cop was sentenced to eight years behind bars and the other was sentenced to 10.

Those facing charges related to drugs, DUI or domestic violence should speak to a lawyer experienced in criminal defense.
