Tennessee educator accused of DUI, leaving accident scene

The news has gone from bad to worse for an educator who lives about 400 miles northeast of Memphis in Clarksville. According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the director of schools for Stewart County was recently arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

But according to a newspaper report, things have gotten worse: the Highway Patrol says Leta Jo Joiner, 57, left the scene of a motor vehicle crash, and that the incident led to her arrest for DUI.

The schools director was booked into the county jail on a pair of misdemeanor charges: driving under the influence and failure to exercise due care.

But police say there is more to the story. Events began to unfold as she was driving her GMC pick-up truck south when she crossed the road’s double yellow lines and went into oncoming traffic. Her vehicle struck the left side of a Dodge pick-up headed north.

The Dodge went off of the road but was apparently able to come safely to a stop in a parking lot.

Meanwhile, Joiner continued on her way, leaving the scene.

The driver of the Dodge said he sustained injuries when the driver-side mirror was struck. He apparently had blood stains on his shirt, but refused medical attention.

According to a news source, a county sheriff’s deputy then drove to the educator’s house, where she was arrested. She is scheduled to appear in court later this month.
