Operation Spring Cleaning results in hundreds of Memphis arrests

The Memphis Police Department recently announced that it had completed a six-week “proactive enforcement detail” in the city. Dubbed “Operation Spring Cleaning,” it focused on three particular types of illegal activities, MPD said: possession of illegal drugs, illegal possession of firearms and violent crimes.

Operation Spring Cleaning began in late April and ended a few days ago. Law enforcement officers from the MPD’s Organized Crime Unit and TACT joined the Multi-Agency Gang Unit in making 190 felony arrests across Memphis. In addition, they reported making 129 misdemeanor arrests.

Of the arrests made during the operation, 196 were of people who were for one reason or another already wanted by law enforcement. Ninety-eight of those taken into custody were on drug-related charges, officials said.

Officers confiscated the following substances during Operation Spring Cleaning:

  • Marijuana: 19 pounds
  • Methamphetamine: 188 grams
  • Crack cocaine: 42 grams
  • Heroin: 8 grams
  • Lortab: 79 pills

Officials also reported seizing 77 firearms, of which 67 were handguns. In addition, 20 vehicles were confiscated, as well as $69,898 in cash, believed to be proceeds from drug sales.

Of those arrested on weapons-related charges, 26 have felony convictions, which means they face either federal or state prosecution for firearm possession. Of this group of 26, officials claim are “documented gang members affiliated with known street gangs such as the Bloods, the Crips, and the Vice Lords.”

Authorities said 29 of the confiscated firearms had been reported stolen in areas ranging from Shelby County to Mississippi, Arkansas and Georgia.

Those facing criminal charges have the right to defend themselves and their freedom with the help of a qualified criminal defense attorney.
