Father and son face charges in deadly DUI crash in Memphis

It is about a 30-mile drive east of Memphis to get to Collierville. A 52-year-old man there has been arrested and charged with filing a false police report after he allegedly lied to Memphis police about his son’s involvement in a fatal DUI crash in October.

Law enforcement officials say the father arrived at the scene of the crash with his 25-year-old son about 1:15 a.m. after police had notified him that a vehicle registered in his name had been involved in a wreck on Highway 385.

The father reportedly told police that his son had been at a University of Memphis area bar when he was beaten and the vehicle was stolen. An arrest affidavit for the father states that the son appeared to be drunk when he and his father showed up at the scene of the crash and had bruises consistent with involvement in a wreck.

Law enforcement officials say that at the time of the fatal crash, the son was out on bond after a previous drunk driving arrest.

Police say that their investigation shows that the father picked his son up at a gas station near the corner of Winchester and Hacks Cross roads. A witness apparently told police that they overheard the son on the phone admit to being in a crash.

A 24-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck.

The father of the man allegedly responsible for the deadly crash faces charges that include being an accessory after the fact to a vehicular homicide, filing a false police report and being an accessory after the fact to leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

According to a news report, the son is charged with drunk driving, vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident involving a death.
