Optometrist arrested in alleged pot-growing operation

If you drive southeast of Memphis for a couple of hours, you will come to Colbert County. The sparsely populated Alabama county is home to a 36-year-old woman who was recently arrested by Tennessee officials in connection with a marijuana-growing operation.

She is the second person arrested, a news report stated. An Alabama optometrist, 45, was arrested a day earlier. The doctor was charged with drug trafficking and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

The cannabis-growing operation was apparently over the state line in Tennessee. Both suspects are being held in the Wayne County jail, about 150 miles east of Memphis.

According to law enforcement officials, the pot-growing operation was in a 7,500-square-foot warehouse that is used to store medical records.

A Tennessee prosecutor said the two suspects have been charged with a variety of drug-related crimes, including:

  • Unlawful manufacturing of a controlled substance
  • Conspiracy to commit unlawful manufacturing of a controlled substance
  • Manufacturing of marijuana concentrate
  • Unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia

The doctor also faces drug-trafficking and possession charges in Alabama. The second suspect faces no charges there.

A Tennessee TV station reported that when law enforcement officials raided the warehouse, they found more than 300 marijuana plants. They also found equipment that is commonly used to extract THC from marijuana.

In a raid on the doctor’s home, officials said they found more than 20 pounds of weed, eight grams of cocaine, a gun, scales and vaping devices.

Authorities said they expect that more arrests are likely to follow.
