Report: Tennessee DUI arrest rate down dramatically over decade

Tennessee media outlets are carrying the news that a recent report shows that there has been a significant drop in drunk driving arrests in our state over the past decade. In 2009, there were 494 DUI arrests in Tennessee per 100,000 residents. By 2018, the rate had plunged to 300 arrests per 100,000 residents – a drop of 39.2 percent.

The current rate means Tennessee ranks 29th among all states. Neighboring Mississippi didn’t fare nearly as well, however, placing fifth among states with the highest DUI arrest rates. Only South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming and North Carolina ranked higher in 2018.

The states with the five lowest drunk driving arrest rates are Missouri, Arkansas, Connecticut, Alabama and Ohio.

The study also noted that men are about three times as likely to be charged with DUI as women and that the older people get, the less likely they are to be arrested for drunk driving. Those in the 21 to 29 age group are most likely to be arrested for DUI, with the demographic accounting for one-third of all drunk driving busts. The numbers fall for each successive group, however:

  • 30–39: 26.7 percent of all DUI arrests nationally
  • 40–49: 16.8 percent
  • 50–59: 12.1 percent
  • 60 and above: 5.9 percent

Drivers under 21 accounted for just 4.2 percent of all drunken driving arrests.

According to the report, the Tennessee DUI arrest rate has dropped 27.8 percent over the five most recent years.

Of course, statistics fade in importance for those facing our state’s strict punishments for a DUI conviction. For them, it’s crucial to discuss the evidence, charges and their legal options with a Memphis attorney experienced in effective DUI defense.
