Memphis man wrongly arrested in police mix-up

Ever wonder how you would feel if you were arrested for a crime you did not commit? Quinton Braxton knows exactly how it feels.

The 20-year-old felt "frustration" and "anger" as he recently spent two days in Shelby County Jail after being arrested for crimes that were actually committed by an identity thief. The thief stole Braxton's ID and then ran up more than $1,500 in charges at a Chattanooga hotel. Memphis police then arrested Braxton on a theft charge.

Braxton was arrested during a traffic stop. He said he was "nervous, scared" as he sat in jail for crimes committed in Chattanooga -- a city the Texas native has never even visited. He said that as he waited in jail, he was "hoping that I can get out, hoping that they do something about this, hoping that I can leave as soon as possible. I'm ready to go home."

A Chattanooga Police Department spokesperson said that the person who stole Braxton's identity will face a slew of charges, including criminal impersonation and criminal simulation in addition to felony theft and fraud charges.

Braxton's mother told a reporter that police should have known that her son was not the culprit. She said law enforcement officials had a photo of the suspect -- a man who looks nothing like her son.

"But the officer still arrested him."

Braxton said his biggest fear was "that they were never gonna find out that I didn't do it."

Those who face unwarranted criminal charges can fight for their freedom and reputation with the help of an effective criminal defense attorney devoted to protecting clients.
