Memphis firearms theft suspects arrested near Chicago

It is about a nine-hour, 500-mile drive almost due north of Memphis to get to Midlothian, Illinois. The Chicago suburb of about 14,000 residents sits southwest of the city. The village perhaps best known for its role in the development of railroad in the area recently made its way into the headlines when men suspected of stealing a shipment of guns from a Memphis freight yard were arrested on charges of possession of stolen firearms.

The men arrested are suspects in one of the biggest gun heists ever investigated by the federal government's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The firearms were taken from a United Parcel facility, according to news reports.

The .22 and .380 caliber Ruger handguns were brand new.

A 24-year-old suspect turned himself in to federal authorities and was taken into custody. He and his alleged accomplice were apparently discovered in a van outside a Midlothian drug store.

According to a news report, the 18-year-old was taken into custody by police officers after a brief chase.

Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives officials said the firearms were shipped from the Ruger factory in North Carolina to Memphis and were scheduled to go by tractor-trailer to Dallas, Texas. They said the two suspects drove a U-Haul truck to the freight yard and loaded the weapons into the vehicle.

The 24-year-old has been charged with being a felon in possession of firearms.

Those facing state or federal gun crime charges should speak with a criminal defense attorney with extensive experience in this area of the law.
