Former Memphis Tigers hoops star arrested on drug charges

With a blue-collar toughness, star point guard Andre Allen was a pivotal figure on the University of Memphis Tigers basketball team from 3005 to 2008. Alongside transcendent talent Derrick Rose, the undersized Allen helped the Tigers win a record 38 games in his senior season. The Tigers fell just short of winning a national championship, in part because Allen was kicked off of the squad just prior to the Final Four after he failed a NCAA-mandated drug test.

The news of Allen’s recent arrest on drug charges arrived with the latest edition of the NCAA tournament in full swing. Allen was arrested a few miles east of FedEx Forum at his Cordova home.

According to the Memphis Commercial Appeal, detectives with the narcotics division of the Shelby County Sheriff's Office executed a search warrant before arresting the 33-year-old. The officers reported finding marijuana in the home, as well as THC cartridges used in vaping pens.

According to a police report, the deputies also found a loaded 9 mm handgun in Allen’s living room. The former point guard and another person in the residence were taken into custody.

The Commercial Appeal said Allen was a “fan favorite” back in the day for his “bullish style of playing his position.” After Allen’s ouster from the 2008 squad, the Tigers went on to defeat UCLA in the Final Four before falling to Kansas in overtime 75 to 68.

Allen was arrested twice two years later on drugs and weapons charges and then again in 2014 on similar allegations. He spent some time behind bars that year, but finished his degree at the University of Memphis after his release.

"I'm the first person in my family to graduate,” Allen said at the time. “It's something I promised my mother I was gonna do."

Those facing similar charges should speak with a skilled lawyer experienced in drug defense.
