Memphis rapper BlocBoy JB arrested on drugs, guns charges

Early last year, Memphis-based rapper BlocBoy JB and his friend, Drake, released “Look Alive,” a collaboration that climbed all the way to number six on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. In July 2018, BlocBoy JB’s South Walnut Bend Road home was raided by the Shelby County Narcotics Unit armed with a search warrant that named James Baker (BlocBoy JB’s real name) as its intended target.

A few days ago, Baker was arrested on charges that include possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia and theft of property under $1,000. He’s also accused of being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun.

The charges stem from last year’s search warrant raid of his home, law enforcement officials said. At the time, officers who searched the home reported that they found and confiscated illegal drugs, digital scales, six guns (one of which had been reported stolen) and ammunition.

According to a news source, Baker allegedly told a detective that the illegal drugs were his and that he had known that the guns were in his home. However, he was released from custody after agreeing to cooperate in the future. Officials said recently that Baker has not fulfilled his end of that agreement.

After the 22-year-old rapper turned himself in at the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, he was arrested and booked. He was later released on $50,000 bond.

Those facing drug-related or weapons-related charges should decline to speak with investigators and prosecutors until they have discussed the evidence and case with an experienced Memphis criminal defense attorney.
