Tennessee man named Tupac Shakur arrested for meth possession

He has sold more than 75 million recordings worldwide. He’s in the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame, has starred in feature films and been hailed as a groundbreaking musical artist. But Tupac Shakur was gunned down more than 20 years ago, so it was a little strange to see recent news reports that the iconic rapper – or someone bearing his name – had been arrested in Tennessee on drug charges.

According to Johnson City law enforcement officials, a 40-year-old man named Tupac Shakur was arrested after he allegedly pulled a knife on officers and was found to have in his possession methamphetamine.

The Johnson City Police Department said officers were dispatched after the department received calls about Shakur, who apparently had active arrest warrants issued by another law enforcement agency. When officers arrived, they saw Shakur inside a car and tried to arrest him.

They reported that he pulled away, reached for his waistband and then turned toward officers holding a knife. He was then disarmed, taken into custody and searched, the officers said. They apparently found on him several baggies containing meth.

He has been charged with meth possession, aggravated assault and possession of unlawful drug paraphernalia.

According to news reports, the full name of the man arrested is Tupac Amaru Shakur – exactly the same as the late West Coast hip hop innovator.

A first-time meth possession conviction can result in up to a year in jail, but if it is a repeated offense, it’s possible to be sentenced to up to six years behind bars.

Depending on circumstances, an aggravated assault conviction can mean sentences ranging from a year in jail all the way up to 15 years in prison.
